Η σειρά BMW Art Car ξεκίνησε τη δεκαετία του '70 και συνδύαζε αγωνιστικά αυτοκίνητα με έργα γνωστών καλλιτεχνών, μετατρέποντας κάθε αμάξωμα σε φορητό πίνακα.
Διεκάστ κατασκευή και ανοιγόμενα μέρη σε ένα εικαστικό θέμα
Το μεταλλικό αμάξωμα δίνει στο μοντέλο πραγματικό βάρος στο χέρι, κάτι που ταιριάζει με τη σοβαρότητα ενός συλλεκτικού κομματιού βασισμένου σε έργο τέχνης. Αυτό το μοντέλο διαθέτει ανοιγόμενα μέρη, οπότε πόρτες ή καπό ανοίγουν και αποκαλύπτουν εσωτερικές λεπτομέρειες, μια πρόσθετη διάσταση επίδειξης πέρα από την ίδια τη ζωγραφική στο εξωτερικό. Το μοντέλο είναι καινούργιο, αλλά η συσκευασία φέρει ίχνη αποθήκευσης, δηλαδή φυσιολογικά σημάδια από χρόνια σε ράφι ή αποθήκη, χωρίς αυτό να επηρεάζει την ποιότητα του ίδιου του μοντέλου. Η ακρίβεια εδώ κρίνεται κυρίως στο πόσο πιστά αναπαράγεται η ζωγραφική σύνθεση του Rauschenberg στην επιφάνεια του αμαξώματος.
Το 635 CSi ως καμβάς του Rauschenberg
Ο Robert Rauschenberg ήταν από τους πιο γνωστούς Αμερικανούς καλλιτέχνες της εποχής του, και η συμβολή του στη σειρά BMW Art Car έδωσε στο 635 CSi μια ταυτότητα εντελώς διαφορετική από ένα συνηθισμένο αγωνιστικό coupe.
